My first attempt at booting the 2.6.5 kernel didn't go smoothly due to a mistake I made while compiling it. I accidentally compiled ext3 and reiserfs as modules, even though some partitions were using these formats. Consequently, the kernel tried to mount an ext3 system as an ext2 and ended up corrupting that particular partition.Thankfully, I was able to recover from this by manually running fsck. Only a few files, such as /var/log/messages and the rpm database, were damaged, but I had a backup of the latter from about a month ago while the former doesn't really matter.After recompiling the kernel with ext3 and reiserfs included as part of the 'monolith', it booted up but none of the modules seem to get loaded.<code>modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented</code>I re-ran make modules_install and noticed a warning which i had missed earlier. It's been nearly a year since I last installed a new kernel. I decided to wait till 2.6 has been tried out by other guinea pigs before deciding to become one myself.The first encounter is the brand new make xconfig. This is fantastic, configuring the kernel before installation is no longer the tedius task that it used to be. Apparently the current system ismake xconfigmakemake modules_installof course if you follow thes steps you still have to copy bzImage to your /boot folder and edit grub. (the instructions are for lilo)

Just installed CMU Sphinx. Had a look the docs and it kind of made my head spin. In case you have read past entries in this blog you would know that I am the kind of guy who reads tech docs for relaxation the way other people read novels.Having trouble with he docs I then decided to try the next best thing - just blindly run the program. After all that's what many people using the M$ operating systems do (and end up losing all their data).So what happened when I ran the programs? - Core Dump.March 23, 2023 Update : Revisiting this topic after a long time, I found that CMU Sphinx is still being developed even though not very actively and according to their own admission no longer even close to cutting edge. They had released an update in 2022 - after a gap of 10 years.

Even though developing speech recognition engines is a complex and challenging task, using software that leverages these engines and libraries is comparatively easier. However, a common issue in voice recognition is that sometimes a spoken word can be matched to multiple written words, as with the words "for," "fore," and "four."That's where alternative tokens come into the picture. When the engine cannot make an exact match it will give you a set of alternative tokens. In the Java Speech API. You can specify the number of alternatives that you want to see. What the API guarantees is that you will get no more than that number of alternatives. There will be many cases where the engine can make an exact match and alternatives are not needed at all.Recently, I've been experimenting with CloudGarden and found a bug in the system. The number of alternatives specified is not being honored, as I still get two or three alternatives even when the setting is configured for only one.Looks like I will have take another look at the IBM implementation. what I am about to say is not an April Fool's joke - I am the April fool. The term "April Fool" was initially used to refer to individuals who were unaware of the Julian calendar.I have been programming for nearly seventeen years now. (That's right 17 years). I am still a lame old newbie when it comes to date and time functions in the handful of programming languages that i use.Over the years i have dabbled in many of them ranging from a BASIC on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="180.html">Spectrum</a>, through ANSI C to all three flavours of Java (J2SE, J2ME, J2EE). There was a run in with fortran while I did a small research into quantum mechanics at university. There has also been a little bit of C++ programming. Over the past few years, I have worked with several other programming languages, including Perl, JavaScript, PHP, and even ASP. Despite my experience, I have never truly mastered the date/time functions in any of them, except for those in SQL, where I have some proficiency. Surprisingly, my knowledge of this area in Java, for which I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer, is my weakest point. It is undoubtedly my Achilles' heel.
