            <p><a href="http://subversion.tigris.org">Subversion</a> continues to dig up new tricks from dark recesses up it's sleeve to befuddle the unwary. I ran into another one of these after refactoring some java code.</p>

            <p>Some classes that had been placed in a package named com.raditha.colors were moved to com.raditha.ui since the old name was inappropriate and the old package was deleted. Since then subversion refuses to accept commits on this trunk even though it will happily allow me to carry out commits in other projects. The error message goes something like this:</p>

            <p><code style="color: #000033">Transmitting file data ........svn: Commit failed (details follow):</code></p>

            <p><code style="color: #000033">svn: Invalid change ordering: new node revision ID without delete</code></p>

            <p>&nbsp;</p>

            <p>As usual there is precious little in google, and the often tried remedy of svn cleanup has no effect either. This is the home remedey that I tried out with success to overcome the problem, hope you find it usefull.</p>

            <ol>
                <li>Copy the offending folders to another location.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>Make a fresh checkout of the offending folder. Lo and behold you will find that the deleted files still linger.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>Kill them again. and commit the changes.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>Clean up the .svn folders in the files that you backed up in step 1.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>Move the remainder into the space that is under version control.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>do an svn stat and add the files that are marked as not been under version control.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
                <li>Do another commit. Viola! the commit is now accepted.
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>

                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                </li>
            </ol>

            <p>&nbsp;</p>

            <p>&nbsp;</p>

            <p>Having installed PearPc a couple of days ago, I decided to have a go at installing <a href="http://opendarwin.org">opendarwin</a> as a guest operating system. It turned out to be a much more pleasent experience than <a href="000578.html">installation of opendarwin</a> as a OS that stands on it's own feet.</p>
            <p>PearPC is a PowerPC emulator for linux. You can install opendarwin as well as OS X as a guest operating system for a PearPc host. Qemu is another virtualization system that can emulate several different processors ranging from i386 to ARM. However it has not reached the same levels maturity as pearpc. Qemu is worth wathchig but I digress...</p>
            <p>Installation of opendawin as a client os is well <a href="http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/installdarwin.html">documented.</a> in fact the pearpc documentation is far superior to darwin's own doc. Not having to give darwin direct access to the hardisk means you need less courage to try the installation. After all the known issues page does say it may not work with IDE drives.</p>
            <p>Though the installation takes quite a bit of time when you run it under the emulator it's considerably less painfull than having to constantly reboot the machine. The end result was pleasent as well. darwin did boot up when run as a guest system and I managed to login and get a shell. Now to figure out how xwindow could be started.</p>

            <p><a href="http://subversion.tigris.org">Subversion</a> is full of surprises, whenever you start to think 'I am finally getting the hang of this' it throws you another riddle to solve.</p>
            <p>I ran into one of those riddles when I attempted to back and recover the repository. After having imported this web site, I followed it up with a few more projects that I am currently working on + some documents into the repository.</p>
            <p>That repository was dumped out again as instructed in the manual with the <em>svnadmin</em> command. (In case you want to know the exact command is: <em>svn admin dump /var/subversion --incremental &gt; svn-001 </em>). This produced a file of around 60MB - no great surprises there. The surprise came when the dump command was repeated today after making some minor modifications to the version controlled files.</p>
            <p>The new dump even with the --incremental flag was 80MB - now this is not what I expected, according to my reckoning it should have been closer to 20MB. This is the riddle in the subversion documentation.</p>
            <p>When you use the <em>--incremental</em> flag you have to recall memory (your's not the computer's) the highest revision number at the time the last backup was taken and start the dump from there. It would have been a lot better if the last revision number dumped was saved in the .subversion/ folder so that there is much less work to due. Apperently laziness is not considered a virtue everywhere.</p>
            <p>So far from the little I know of subversion it looks like the only way to effectively do is to call svnlook command to get information about revision numbers and then decide which ones to dump. So it may be a good idea to include the range of revisions as part of the dump file's name.</p>
            <p>As a parting shot it's worth noting that while the subversion docs contain a few riddles, the CVS manual is a riddle.</p>

            <p>It's been two weeks since my last post, I have been down with indigestion caused by Mother Board Stew.</p>
            <p>Immidiately After I completed my migration from Red Hat 9 to Fedora Core, one of the three hard disks on my computer fell criticially ill and died. All that whirring about while Fedora was being installed proved too much for. The death of the hard disk was no great loss but the time lost in installing Fedora Core several times proved to be too much and I had to spend a lot of my time with other work just to catch up with the back log.</p>
            <p>It turned out that the hard disk failure was caused by a mother board problem. In <a href="https://www.raditha.com/archives/2004_03.html">March</a> I wrote about a suspected <a href="52.html">toast CPU</a> and I have encountered other niggling problems like <a href="000522.html">spontanous restarts</a> the real culprit as it now turns out is the Mother Board.</p>
            <p>Nearly an year ago, me and a friend both purchased Gigabyte ----- motherboards and set up nearly identical systems. Geeks in Sri Lanka are in the habit of setting up their own machines, this may be true everywhere but in Sri Lanka we have an added incentive because branded machines are twice as costly. You find many computer shops selling cheap unbranded machines but walking into one of these shops feels like walking into a used car dealership.</p>
            <p>My friends mother board lasted less than 3 months the vendor did replace it but it died once again and took his CPU along with it to silicon heaven. In my case after the hard disk burn out, I plugged in a new one but the MB absolutely refuse to detect it. To be precise the IDE controller refused to work with four devices (3 Hard Disks, 1 CD Writer) at the same time. It was then that I finally concluded that the mother board was stewed.</p>
            <p>I have been using AMD processors for a long long time, over the last few years I have been through a K6-II, K6-III, Athlon and now an Athlon XP. All four had to be discarded before their time was up because the mother boards were toasted. Thus for a change I decided to try an Intel primarily because Intel makes it's own boards. So for the first time since working on a Pentium 166 many many years ago, I now have another Intel chip ticking away inside my computer.</p>
