Voice Recognition and Dictation

March 29, 2004

The IBM websphere voice tool kit looks pretty good for voice recognition. Though their documentation speaks mainly about voicexml the download also includes a java speech implementation. Unfortunately the software insists on jre 1.3x and refuses to start up if you have a more recent version.

The software also has support for dictation grammar. Once again the documentation is extremely lacking. It took me quite while to figure out that I need to download some additional via voice components. Guess what the ibm site shows a 404 error on the download page!!

Further investigations revealed that some of the free downloads are no longer available. Worse still most of the linux flavours have been removed which is a bit of a suprise coming from IBM.
