Java 5 or 1.5? the plot thickens

July 4, 2004

I have managed to sucessfully download the J2SDK 1.5 (or is it jdk 5.0 ?) at last. (Previous attempts resulted in a corrupted file). The file that I have in my hands is labeled jdk-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586.bin so I am not sure why the installation instructions at
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install-linux.html
should refer to:

J2SE 5.0 Beta 2
Installation Notes

and
Installation Notes
JDK 5.0
Linux (32-bit)

No mention anywhere of a J2SDK like we used to.

Did you notice that the link referred to above says 1.5.0 and not 5.0? No doubt that link itself will be changed before long. hope they remember to update the documents in the download bundle though.

It does look like sun is more confused than anyone else by this new changes. This is surely the last thing that we developers needed at a time when java is gradually finding a wider acceptance than it ever had before.
