Unsupported version number [49.0]

June 9, 2005

Continuing the saga of Java 5: The combined netbeans/java 5 bundled download seems to work very smoothly. Is it the so called seemless integration or have the managed to fix a few bugs? God knows the first release had more than it's fair share.

However, trouble occured after a test project had been built. When trying to use proguard to optimize the jar file I kept running into an error

Unsupported version number [49.0] for class file format

Did a bit of googling, lead to the suprising fin that everyone seemed to think this is caused by a jvm version conflict. I was pretty sure that it is not so. I am very confident that my 1.4 and 1.5 (or 5) installations were not at loggerheads with each other.

Then again, I had not had much success with using the java 5 compiler on my machine so decided to join the bandwagon and do a clean install after uninstalling java 1.4 not suprisingly the problem didn't go away. Serves me right for not going with my gut feeling.

Now the accusing fingure can readily be pointed to proguard. On the proguard site there is mention of a some glitches with java 5. Too bad I didn't check earlier. The my installed version is 2.0. Time is ripe to upgrade to proguard 3.2. Upgrading did indeed solve the problem, no more unsupported version number errors.
