Eolas and Patent Folly

September 30, 2005

It's rare for linux freaks like myself to defend Microsoft, but Microsoft's standing firm against the Eolas patent law suite does need to be comended. Should Eolos have their way in this patent battle they will then target their guns on Firefox and other browsers.

When the dust settles, even if M$ ends up paying millions of $ to the plaintiff they will not be able to do away with the plug in mechanism. If by some chance they start pretending that plug ins never existed millions of websites that use Java, Flash, Real and other media types will be broken over night.

In the end this issue will hopefully expose the evil known as software patents. Microsoft themselves are quite keen to patent various technologies but hopefull they will see the error of their ways.
