NetBeans 5 Beta

October 2, 2005

After the dispointment with the GUI designer in Netbeans 4.1, I decided to try out the 5.0 beta, which is supposed to have a different GUI designer. I decided to be adventurous based the installation on java 6 rather than on java 5. It wasn't a wise decision.

java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: java.io.File.setReadable(boolean, boolean) at java.lang.Class.getMethod(Class.java:1592) at org.netbeans.CLIHandler.secureAccess(CLIHandler.java:668) at org.netbeans.CLIHandler.initialize(CLIHandler.java:443) at org.netbeans.CLIHandler.initialize(CLIHandler.java:281) at org.netbeans.Main.execute(Main.java:157) at org.netbeans.Main.main(Main.java:39) *** glibc detected *** /usr/java/jdk1.6.0/bin/java: free(): invalid pointer: 0x08e7c980 ***

This was followed by a page full of other error messages (which appear to have been generated by native code). The obvious thing to do is to uninstall and try again with java 5

The splash and he welcome screens look good, very good. Let's see if the designer is any better. At first glance it isn't. It still refused to position the components where I want them to go (without tedious right click -> properties blah blah).

I noticed something in the layouts called free design and to have a go at it, with this result:

netbeans exception

Notice that it doesn't tell me where exactly the log file is. It's at
~/.netbeans/5.0beta/var/log

I tried to do the right thing by reporting the bug but the process is too complicated for my liking.
