CDAX on Linux

October 18, 2005

My new broker is part of the Colombo Direct Access (CDAX) system and I downloaded CDAX 5.4 with much enthusiasm only to find that they have sold themselves short with the installer. Why people choose to create binary installers with native code for java applications is something that I will never figure out.

Here is this reason that CDAX is distributd in the form of a binary: the download includes the JVM. Sheesh you would think a linux user would know how to install java on his own. I have three different versions of the JVM running side by side why do I need a fourth?

It wouldn't really matter if the installer works. It does not. It dies lamerly with the suggestion that that errors.log file be looked at for details. It says:

Tue Oct 18 11:17:57 2005 Java wizard not started properly
See errors.log for other possible causes.out of disk space?
Tue Oct 18 11:17:57 2005 Other possible causes for errors:
* Read/write access rights to the 'temp' and installation directories?
* OS need to be patched to run Java apps?
* Anti-virus software installed that won't permit unknonwn executable or JAR files to run?

Obviously this installer was created by someone who has never logged into a linux box. More usefull information is available in a file called jinstall.log

Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 installCompressedJvm ok: true
...
Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 java installer C++ command:
"/usr/local/bin/jvm/jre1.5/bin/java" -cp .:install.jar load Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 java wizard execed with no reported errors
Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 Java wizard not started properly
...

These contradictory message do give a clue as to what the install is upto. It has copied the JVM into a folder in the hard disk and it's lamely trying to execute it with out setting the correct permissions first. I manually chmod the java executable and the installer proceeded smoothly from there on.

Also worth noting is the contents right at the top of the log file. It clearly indicates that the installer is capable of searching for and using a pre installed JVM but some moron has switched off the feature.

Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 Valid versions of jre: 1.3.1 through
Tue Oct 18 11:36:17 2005 Search for JVM: no
