FC5 DVDMarch 30, 2006It's exactly a week since I downloaded the Fedora Core 5 DVD image. DIdn't get a chance to burn a DVD with cause because of my trip to Thailand. Finally today i attempted it but it didn't meet with much success. I have long believed that CD/DVD writing is the achilles heel of linux. K3B, what seems to be the most popular is just the best out of a bad lot. With my installation it always insists on closing any DVD it writes to. Because of that I have dozens of DVDs with less than 1GB of data on them. Burning an image with K3B seems to be imposible. It produces this error k3b: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libk3b.so.2: undefined symbol: _ZN3KIO9NetAccess12mostLocalURLERK4KURLP7QWidget
Google turns up exactly 0 results. As for Xcdroast or nautilus-cd-burner you cannot come up with a worse UI even with a lot of effort and intent to create a bad UI. xdroast also files with an error. xcdroast : execv error while calling /usr/bin/cdrecord.prodvd (No such file or directory)
The last resort is to use the command line cdrecord. After a couple of trial and error attempts I did manage to figure out how to use it by leaving out the device name. cdrecord -dao /home/raditha/Desktop/bordeaux-DVD-i386/FC-5-i386-DVD.iso
Now to back up my hard drive and try to upgrade to FC5.
