Ruby.

April 27, 2006

I have been hearing a lot about Ruby and Ruby on Rails, so I decided to have a look. There are lot's of documents but they all seem to say the same thing or they are sketchy. Digging up a hello world turned out to be a surprisingly difficult task.

class HelloWorld
 def initialize
   puts "Hello, world"
 end
end

Hello. Hasn't these people of heard of '{' and '}'? this syntax belongs on my Sinclair spectrum with it's gosubs. Appearences can be deceptive, so I am going to give this another try even if the installation turns out to be rather tedious.

Funny how all the articles recommend using Ruby on linux but still the introductory tutorials talk about installing on windows. The screen shots are also from windows. Fortunately I came across a fedora specific guide. The number of installation steps are way too many. Why do I have to install FastCGI?
