whatprovides wc?

August 6, 2006

As a result of the hard drive errors, wc seems to have disappeared from my Fedora Core instalaltion (this is on my desktop not the server that crashed). For the life of me I can't seem to find what provides it.

I tried yum whatprovides wc but got a huge list of packages that kepts scrolling off the top of the screen, it seems to list every single package that's installed on my system but finding wc in that list is like finding a needle in a haystack. Apparently every file with 'wc' in it is listed.

Then I tried rpmfind.net. Surpise, Surpise, there is a libwcs but no mention of wc. Tried google, if using yum is like finding a needle in a haystack, using google is like trying to find a specific grain of sand at the beach.

Then I sat down and thought about it, and reckoned that I should try yum whatprovides /usr/bin/wc. This time yum had an answer. it's coreutils.
