First boot of 2.6.5
My first attempt to boot the 2.6.5 kernel was a near disaster, i had accidentally compiled ext3 and reiserfs as modules while some partitions use these formats. As a result the kernel attempted to mount an ext3 system as an ext2 and appears to have corrupted that partilcular partition.
I had to manually run fsck to recover from it luckily the only files damaged was /var/log/messages which doesn't matter too much for me and the rpm database of which I had taken a backup about a month ago.
After recompiling the kernel with the ext3 and reiser as part of the 'monolith' it booted up fine but none of the modules seem to get loaded.
modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented
I reran make modules_install and noticed a warning which i had missed earlier. It said
Warning: you may need to install module-init-tools
Unfortunately the networking modules aren't up either so it's time to reboot 2.4.20
